Platforms must specify in the terms and conditions what factors matter in determining what someone gets to see.

You are entitled to information about the recommendation algorithms a platform offers. Recommendation systems determine which content users get to see in their feed and in what order. The terms and conditions list the factors that matter in determining what someone gets to see.

Very large online platforms have a public register with information on all online ads they have shown. This includes which groups the ad is/was targeting.

  1. Instagram and Facebook (Meta)
    • On the Facebook/Instagram website, you can view their ad library. There, you can search by advertiser or ad and view information about ads: facebook.com/ads/library

All ads on online platforms include information about that ad, including why you are seeing it.

Ads on online platforms must include information about that ad. You must be able to see immediately and clearly: that it is an advertisement, on whose behalf it is shown, who paid for the advertisement and information about why exactly you are shown the advertisement, e.g. on the basis of which characteristics.

  1. Instagram and Facebook
    • On both Instagram and Facebook, you can click on the three dots at the top right of an ad. You can then choose "Why am I seeing this ad?" to find out.
  2. TikTok
    • When you see an ad on TikTok, a long press on the screen opens a menu. You can then choose 'About this ad' for more information.
  3. LinkedIn
    • When you see an ad on Linkedin, you can press three dots at the top right of the ad. You can then choose 'Why am I seeing this ad?'
  4. X
    • For an ad on X, you can click on three dots in the top right-hand corner. To get more information, you can then choose 'Why are you seeing this ad?'
  5. YouTube
    • If a YouTube video has an ad playing, you can click the (i) icon in the bottom left corner for more information.
